Comparison
Remotion vs Motion Canvas
Remotion and Motion Canvas both let you write video as TypeScript, but they think about time differently: Remotion computes each frame from its number, Motion Canvas plays animations in order like a script. Here is how they compare, from their own docs, and how FrameJam's review loop fits either.
Facts about other tools are from their official docs and websites, as of Oct 2026. Each one links to its source, and all of them are listed under Sources.

Remotion: every frame is a function
In Remotion, a component gets a frame number and returns what that frame looks like. To fade something in over two seconds, you interpolate the frame from 0 to 60 (at 30 fps) into an opacity from 0 to 1. You get the whole React ecosystem, a render command and cloud rendering on AWS Lambda, and agents get official Agent Skills. Companies with more than 3 employees need a Company License.
Motion Canvas: the animation reads like a script
In Motion Canvas, a scene is a generator. Each line runs after the one before: move the circle, then yield* waitFor(1), then fade in the label. That makes long, sequenced explanations easy to read and change, and the editor shows the result live as you save. It's MIT-licensed. We found no official guide for AI agents in its docs, and its last tagged release on GitHub is from December 2024, though the repository still gets commits.
If you like that way of writing but need rendering without the editor, Revideo is a fork of Motion Canvas that adds headless rendering. It's covered in Remotion alternatives.
Which to pick
Pick Remotion if you want React, a render command your agent or CI can run, or rendering many videos in the cloud. Pick Motion Canvas for explanatory animation where the order of events matters most, and where you're happy to press RENDER yourself. Either way, if a project already exists, keep its tool.
How FrameJam fits either
FrameJam reviews the rendered video, so it doesn't matter which one made it. You comment on a moment, a spot or a range; the agent gets each comment with its timestamp and a frame image, and finds the place in the code. In Remotion that is a frame range in a component; in Motion Canvas, a yield* line. The Explainer playbook includes notes for both, and Math Animation follows the same method if your project isn't in Manim.
Make a 90-second explainer with the FrameJam playbook "Explainer" in this project, using its own tool. Show me a storyboard first, then render v1 and open it in FrameJam.More on each: Remotion with your agent and Motion Canvas with your agent.
Playbooks to start from
A playbook is FrameJam's method for one kind of video. Your agent follows it in whichever tool the project uses.
- make a narrated explainer video with AIExplainer: A topic, article or script goes in, a narrated animated explainer comes out.
- make a 3Blue1Brown math animation with AIMath Animation: A math or science idea goes in, a calm animated explainer in the style of 3Blue1Brown comes out.
- make YouTube Shorts with AI from talking-head clipsShow & Tell Short: Raw talking-head clips go in, a tight vertical short that shows what you talk about while you say it comes out.
Questions
What's the main difference between Remotion and Motion Canvas?
How you describe time. In Remotion, a React component gets the current frame number and computes what to show. In Motion Canvas, a scene is a generator function that runs top to bottom, and each yield* plays an animation before the next line starts.
Which one can render from the command line?
Remotion has a render command, npx remotion render, and can also render from Remotion Studio. Motion Canvas's docs describe rendering from its editor, with the RENDER button.
Which is free for commercial use?
As of Oct 2026, Motion Canvas is MIT-licensed. Remotion is free for individuals, non-profits and companies with up to 3 employees; larger for-profit companies need a Company License.
Does FrameJam work with both?
Yes. FrameJam reviews the rendered video, whichever tool made it, and the agent keeps the project's own tool. In Motion Canvas you press RENDER after the agent's changes; in Remotion the agent can render by itself.
