An After Effects alternative for motion graphics in code

After Effects is the standard for motion design, and it's a deep desktop app with a subscription. If what you make is motion graphics, like launch videos, kinetic type and UI animations, there is another way: your AI agent writes the animation as code, and you direct it by commenting on the frames.

Facts about other tools are from their official docs and websites, as of Oct 2026. Each one links to its source, and all of them are listed under Sources.

What After Effects does well

Adobe calls After Effects "a motion design and visual effects software app" for animating "text, graphics, illustrations, and more". It already has code in it: expressions are small pieces of JavaScript on animated properties, and scripts are written in ExtendScript. You render through the Render Queue or Adobe Media Encoder. Its AI features include Object Matte, which selects a subject with a click and carries the selection across frames.

It's subscription-only: Adobe's US plans page lists the single-app plan at US$22.99 a month on an annual plan, billed monthly, and a 7-day free trial.

Motion graphics in code, with your agent

Open-source tools turn code into video: Hyperframes (HTML and GSAP, Apache 2.0), Remotion (React; free for individuals and companies with up to 3 employees, per its license) and Motion Canvas (TypeScript, MIT). Coding agents like Claude, ChatGPT's Codex and Cursor write that code well. What's missing is the part where a motion designer looks at a frame and says "this lands too late". That's what FrameJam adds. The guide to making videos with Claude walks through the whole process, from references to the final render.

How it works

  1. Pick a style for the look: palette, type, textures, easing, transitions and pacing.
  2. Pick a playbook for the kind of video, like a showreel or a launch teaser, or just describe it.
  3. The agent builds it on the beat, renders it and opens it in FrameJam.
  4. You comment like a director: pin the element, mark the range, say what's wrong. The agent gets each comment with a frame image and fixes it in the code.
Make a 20-second motion design showreel for our brand with the FrameJam playbook "Motion Design Showreel": our logo shape stays on screen and morphs on every bar. Render v1 and open it in FrameJam.

When to stay in After Effects

Keep After Effects for work on live footage, like isolating a subject from the background or adding effects to camera shots. Keep it too when a team already shares After Effects projects and templates. Code is the better fit when the video is built from type, shapes, screenshots and UI, when you'll make many versions, or when you want an agent to do the building. More on the tools in Hyperframes with Claude and Motion Canvas with your agent.

Playbooks to start from

A playbook is FrameJam's method for one kind of video. Your agent follows it in whichever tool the project uses.

Questions

Can code really replace After Effects?

For motion graphics made from type, shapes, UI and screenshots, often yes: launch videos, teasers, explainers, logo reveals. For work on live footage, like isolating a moving subject or compositing effects, After Effects is still the tool built for it.

What does After Effects cost?

As of Oct 2026, Adobe's US plans page lists the single-app plan at US$22.99 a month on an annual plan, billed monthly. It's subscription-only, with a 7-day free trial.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Your agent writes the code. You describe the video, pick a style if you like, and review each render in FrameJam by clicking the frames you want changed.

Is FrameJam an animation tool?

No. FrameJam doesn't animate or render. Your agent animates in Hyperframes, Remotion or Motion Canvas; FrameJam gives it styles and playbooks to follow and gives you the review page.

Can I keep using my After Effects scripts?

Yes, After Effects stays your tool for those projects. FrameJam reviews any rendered video, so you can still collect frame-accurate comments on an After Effects export and hand them to your agent.
