Remotion alternatives for code-based video

Remotion made "video as code" popular, but it isn't the only way to do it, and its license isn't free for larger companies. These are the open-source alternatives and the render APIs, what each is like to write, and which ones FrameJam works with.

Facts about other tools are from their official docs and websites, as of Oct 2026. Each one links to its source, and all of them are listed under Sources.

Hyperframes

The closest alternative. Hyperframes, from HeyGen, also renders by seeking each frame in headless Chrome and encoding with FFmpeg, and its README says it was inspired by Remotion. The difference is the input: plain HTML with data attributes for timing, instead of React. It is Apache 2.0 with no per-render fees or commercial-use thresholds, and it ships agent skills and a Claude Code plugin. Compared in detail in Remotion vs Hyperframes.

Motion Canvas

Motion Canvas is a TypeScript library that uses generators to program animations, plus an editor with a real-time preview. Scenes read top to bottom, which suits explanations. It renders from the editor's RENDER button. MIT-licensed. Compared in Remotion vs Motion Canvas.

Revideo

Revideo is a fork of Motion Canvas that, in its own words, "adds headless rendering, audio support, and a library-first API". You can render with a renderVideo() function or expose a render endpoint, and its README notes that a scene is plain TypeScript that Claude or Codex can write. One thing to know: its website says the team now primarily works on Midrender, and recent changes to the engine haven't all been brought back to the open-source repository. It is MIT-licensed.

Manim

Manim is "an animation engine for explanatory math videos". The community edition was forked from the tool Grant Sanderson made for 3Blue1Brown. You write Python classes and render from the command line, for example manim -p -ql example.py SquareToCircle. It's MIT-licensed and the right pick for equations, graphs and geometry. FrameJam's Math Animation playbook builds in Manim Community from a starter project, and the guide to making videos with Claude covers when to reach for Manim instead of Hyperframes or Remotion.

Render APIs

If you want rendering as a service instead of a library, there are APIs. Remotion Lambda renders Remotion videos in your own AWS account (Remotion's license still applies). Shotstack is a cloud video editing API priced by minutes rendered, from 20¢ a minute pay-as-you-go. Creatomate is a video and image API on credit-based plans, about 14 credits per minute of 720p video. These are built for generating many videos from templates. FrameJam has no integration with them; it can review a file they produce once your agent downloads it.

Where FrameJam fits

FrameJam isn't on this list as an alternative, because it doesn't render. It works with whichever tool you pick: the agent renders, FrameJam plays the file, and your comments on exact frames go back to the agent with frame images. Its playbooks and styles work the same in each tool.

Make a 60-second motion design showreel with the FrameJam playbook "Motion Design Showreel". Render v1 and open it in FrameJam for review.

Playbooks to start from

A playbook is FrameJam's method for one kind of video. Your agent follows it in whichever tool the project uses.

Questions

What is the best free Remotion alternative?

It depends on how you want to write video. Hyperframes (Apache 2.0) is the closest: it also renders web pages with headless Chrome and FFmpeg, but from plain HTML. Motion Canvas (MIT) suits sequenced explanations, and Manim (MIT) suits math.

Why look for a Remotion alternative at all?

Usually the license: as of Oct 2026, Remotion is free for individuals, non-profits and companies with up to 3 employees, and larger for-profit companies need a Company License. Some people also prefer not to write React.

Is FrameJam a Remotion alternative?

No. FrameJam doesn't render video. It works with Remotion and every tool on this page: your agent renders the video in its tool, and FrameJam is where you review it and send comments back.

Should I move an existing Remotion project?

Only if you have a reason, like the license. FrameJam won't suggest it: its skill tells the agent to keep a project's own tool.
