ChatGPT video editing with Codex and FrameJam

The ChatGPT desktop app can do real video editing in its Work and Codex modes: it cuts recordings, builds animations and renders the file. With the FrameJam plugin, you review each version and click the exact frame you want changed.

Facts about other tools are from their official docs and websites, as of Oct 2026. Each one links to its source, and all of them are listed under Sources.

ChatGPT, Codex and plugins

In the ChatGPT desktop app you choose ChatGPT or Codex, and in ChatGPT a toggle above the composer switches between Chat and Work. OpenAI's docs say plugins bundle skills and MCP servers and work in Chat and Work in ChatGPT and in Codex in the desktop app; the Codex IDE extension doesn't support plugins. The desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension all support MCP servers. According to OpenAI's pricing page, Work and Codex are included in every ChatGPT plan from Free to Enterprise.

Install FrameJam in ChatGPT

Open the ChatGPT desktop app in Work or Codex, start a new chat, and paste:

Run `npx -y framejam install codex` and open the link it prints in your built-in browser.

It installs the FrameJam plugin and opens FrameJam in the app's browser. Quit and reopen the app so the plugin loads, then type /framejam:start in any chat. To set it up by hand instead, run:

codex plugin marketplace add moritzkremb/framejam codex plugin add framejam@framejam

The install docs cover every option.

ChatGPT video editing, step by step

  1. Give ChatGPT the path to a recording, or an idea, and say what you want, as you would to an editor.
  2. It picks the tool: ffmpeg for cutting, Hyperframes for new animation, or the tool your project already uses. It renders the video and opens it in FrameJam.
  3. You comment on the video itself: pause and type, click a spot, or drag across a range. Then press Finish review.
  4. ChatGPT gets every comment with its timestamp and a frame image, and makes version two.
~/Movies/tutorial-raw.mov Cut the dead space and retakes with the FrameJam playbook "Clean Cut", then open the cut in FrameJam so I can review it.

Every playbook works in ChatGPT, from step-by-step how-to videos to launch videos. The Claude guide shows the same loop on video; it works the same way here. Using Cursor instead? See videos in Cursor.

Playbooks that work with ChatGPT (Codex)

A playbook is FrameJam's method for one kind of video. Your agent follows it in whichever tool the project uses.

Questions

Can ChatGPT edit videos?

Yes, in the ChatGPT desktop app's Work or Codex mode, which can run commands on your computer. It writes the edit as code (ffmpeg, Hyperframes, Remotion or your project's tool) and renders a video file. FrameJam is where you watch it and tell it what to change.

Which ChatGPT plan do I need?

OpenAI's Codex docs say ChatGPT Work and Codex are included in the Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans (as of Oct 2026). Usage limits depend on the plan. FrameJam itself is free.

Does it work in the Codex IDE extension?

Not as a plugin: OpenAI's docs say the IDE extension doesn't support plugins. You can still add FrameJam's MCP server there by hand, as the install docs show.

Is codex video editing different from ChatGPT video editing?

It's the same agent. Codex is the coding agent in the ChatGPT desktop app and the Codex CLI. FrameJam installs once and works in both modes of the desktop app.

Does my video get uploaded?

Not by FrameJam. It runs on your computer and keeps projects in ~/.framejam. ChatGPT sees the comments you write and the frame images they point at.
