Descript alternatives: let your agent cut the video
Descript made editing video as easy as editing a document. The alternative on this page goes one step further: you don't edit at all. Your AI agent cuts and assembles the recording, and you review the result and point at what to fix.
Facts about other tools are from their official docs and websites, as of Oct 2026. Each one links to its source, and all of them are listed under Sources.
What Descript does
Descript is "an AI video and audio editor that lets you edit by editing text": it transcribes your recording, and you cut and rearrange the video by changing the transcript. It detects filler words (in English transcripts), Studio Sound cleans up voice audio, and Underlord, still in beta, is its AI co-editor that takes instructions. It runs as a desktop app on macOS and Windows and in the browser.
Pricing per person, per month: Free ($0, 1 hour of media a month, 720p export), Hobbyist ($16 billed annually or $24 monthly), Creator ($24 or $35), Business ($50 or $65), and Enterprise on request. Timeline export to Premiere, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro needs Creator or higher.
Other editors with a transcript
Adobe Premiere Pro has Text-Based Editing: it transcribes your clips and you build a rough cut from the transcript. CapCut is an AI photo and video editor with a free plan; its pricing page notes that the prices shown are for reference and depend on your account.
The agent alternative
Every editor above still has you doing the edit. With a coding agent like Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, you describe the edit instead, and the agent does it with free tools on your computer: a transcript from whisper, cuts with ffmpeg, and animations in code when you want them. FrameJam is the review step: you watch the cut, pin a spot or a range, and the agent gets each comment with its timestamp and a frame image. The guide to editing videos with Claude walks through it on a real recording.
| Descript | Your agent and FrameJam | |
|---|---|---|
| You | Edit the transcript | Describe the edit, then comment on the result |
| Filler words and retakes | Filler word detection in English | Clean Cut finds pauses, fillers, false starts and repeated takes |
| Hand-off to an editor | Timeline export on Creator and up | Clean Cut exports a cut list |
| Cost | $0 to $65 per person a month; Enterprise on request | FrameJam is free; the agent runs on your existing plan |

~/Downloads/podcast-ep12.mov Use the FrameJam playbook "Clean Cut": cut the pauses, filler words and retakes, keep my last take of each line, and open it in FrameJam for review.Which fits you
Descript fits if you like editing by hand, or want Studio Sound and its other AI fixes in one app. The agent route fits if you make the same kind of edit again and again, want animations on top that an editor can't easily make, or want the edit done while you do something else. For shorts, try Show & Tell Short and Dynamic Layout Short; for the start of a YouTube video, YouTube Hook.
Playbooks to start from
A playbook is FrameJam's method for one kind of video. Your agent follows it in whichever tool the project uses.
- remove silence from video, plus filler words and retakesClean Cut: A raw recording goes in, the same video as a tight, fast-paced jump cut without pauses, fillers and retakes comes out.
- edit a YouTube intro hook with AIYouTube Hook: Your intro script or recording goes in, the 20–60 second opening that keeps people watching your long video comes out.
- make YouTube Shorts with AI from talking-head clipsShow & Tell Short: Raw talking-head clips go in, a tight vertical short that shows what you talk about while you say it comes out.
- edit shorts with AI, with layouts that switch as you talkDynamic Layout Short: A raw talking-head recording goes in, a vertical short that switches layout with what you say comes out.
- make a founder launch video for X with AIFounder Launch: A founder talking to camera and screen recordings go in, a tight launch video for X comes out.
Questions
Is there a free Descript alternative?
Descript itself has a free plan (1 hour of media a month and 720p export, as of Oct 2026). CapCut also has a free plan. If you'd rather your agent did the cutting, FrameJam is free and open source, and the Clean Cut playbook uses free local tools; the agent runs on your Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor plan.
Can my agent remove filler words like Descript does?
Yes. The Clean Cut playbook transcribes the recording, finds pauses, filler words, false starts and repeated takes, and cuts them, keeping your last take of each line. You review the cut in FrameJam and pin anything it got wrong.
Does FrameJam replace Descript?
Not if you want to edit by hand. FrameJam isn't an editor; it's where you review what your agent made. It replaces Descript only in the sense that the agent does the edit you would have done there.
Can I move the cut into another editor?
Yes. Clean Cut can export a cut list for your editor. Descript can also export timelines to Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro on its Creator plan and up.
Is my recording uploaded?
Not by FrameJam: projects stay in ~/.framejam on your computer. Transcription can run locally with whisper, or with a paid service if you choose one.
